On 25 February 2010, partner Dr Andrius Smaliukas held a seminar for Lithuanian law clerks on the most important elements and recent developments in the Property Law. The seminar was organised by the National Court Administration, the Ministry of Justice and the Law Clerks Association.

The firm’s insolvency expert, partner Paul Varul, led a seminar on bankruptcy law for judges on 3 March 2010. His presentation provided an overview of the most important changes that entered into force on 1 January 2010 with amendments to the Estonian Bankruptcy Act, and also the latest court practices and problems related to implementing the act.
Varul Vilgerts Smaliukas in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Lithuania will convene the conference “Reform on Pledge and Mortgage in the Republic of Lithuania“ on 18 March 2010 at Reval Hotel Lietuva between 9 am and 1 pm Vilnius time. The conference is free of charge.
On 18 February 2010 Robert Juodka, managing partner of the firm’s Vilnius office and Chairman of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce, spoke at the seminar “Successful business cooperation in Estonia and Finland – practical aspects” held by VšI; “Investuok Lietuvoje” and Vši; “Eksportuojanc(ioji Lietuva”. His presentation “Lithuanian Business Culture from the Estonian point of View” focused on the most important aspects of business cooperation in Estonia and Finland.
Varul Vilgerts Smaliukas, in cooperation with the Riga Graduate School of Law (www.rgsl.edu.lv) and White & Case LLP (www.whitecase.com) organises a seminar on recent developments in EC and Latvian competition law. The seminar will take place on 5th of March 2010 (between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Riga time) and will be free of charge.
Firm’s senior associate Tarmo Peterson gave an overview of the Estonian Reorganisation Act at the reorganisation advisors training held on 29-30 January by the EBS Executive Training Centre (EBS ETC), member of Estonian Business School Group.

On December 12 2009, during
the annual conference of the Lithuanian Chambers of Notaries partner Dr Andrius
Smaliukas made a presentation on the ongoing legal reform of
Lithuanian mortgage system.
The Minister of Economy
appointed Dr Andrius Smaliukas as
one of the new members of the working group with the task to facilitate
anti-bureaucratic measures that affect business in Lithuania.

Managing Partner of the Estonian office Helmut Pikmets gave a speech on
the main tax issues regarding the reorganisation of business activities
at the annual Accounting Conference held November 26-27 in Pärnu,
Estonia.
The working group, appointed by the Minister of Justice and chaired by
the patner of our firm Dr. Andrius Smaliukas, prepared the draft
legislative package aimed to implement the Directive 2008/122/EC of 14
January 2009 on the protection of consumers in respect of certain
aspects of timeshare, long-term holiday product, resale and exchange
contracts.
In November this year, Varul Vilgerts Smaliukas partners, Ms Debora
Pavila and Ms Julija Jerneva began their series of seminars on
competition law to Latvian judges. Julija and Debora are lecturing
alongside representatives of the Latvian Competition Council, and the
seminars are organised by the Latvian Judicial Training Centre with
funding from the European Commission and the Soros foundation.
European Parliament approved the Final Report on ’Protection of
Purchasers in the Case of Cross-Border Purchases of Real Property in
the European Union’.
On 19 November 2009 , Managing Partner, Robert Juodka delivered a
presentation “Contractual Safeguards or legal means to mitigate credit
risk” at the annual Business Contracts conference 2009.
Partner Paul Varul attended a conference “A Common Frame of Reference
for European Contract Law“ held in Stockholm, Sweden 22–23 October 2009
by the Swedish Ministry of Justice.
Senior Associates, Vaido Põldoja and Tarmo Peterson, have acted as
national rapporteurs for Estonia assisting the Brussels office of
Lovells LLP in drafting an update mandated by the European Commission
on the “Study on the Enforcement of State Aid Law at National Level.”
The publisher, Dienas bizness, in cooperation with the firm, the
Association of Latvian Energy contractors and Electricians, and the
Riga Energy Agency organized “Energy Forum 2009” on 5 November 2009.
On 21 October 2009, partner Inga Martinkutė, participated in an
international discussion on the Baltic Economic Outlook 2009–2010
organized by the Norwegian—Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce in
partnership with the Swedish and Danish Chambers of Commerce and the
Finnish Business Community.
Senior Associate, Vaido Põldoja participated in a high profile state
aid conference, “State aid private enforcement” as a national
rapporteur for Estonia.
On 4 – 9 October partners Robert
Juodka, Andrius Smaliukas and Inga Martinkute attended the annual
International Bar Association (IBA) conference in Madrid. The
conference highlighted an extremely wide range of complex legal topics
and was attended by a record number of over 4000 senior business
lawyers from around the world.
As a member of the INSOL Academic Forum, partner Paul Varul attended
the INSOL Europe Annual Congress 2009 and the INSOL Europe Academic
Forum Annual Conference held on 30 September-1 October 2009 in
Stockholm, Sweden.
Partner Paul Varul is a keynote
speaker on “Political Foundations—the East/West Dimension” at a
reputable European University Institute conference “The Foundations of
European Private Law” to be held on 28–30 September 2009 in Florence, Italy.

The largest tax dispute in the Baltics, the former shareholders of
Stora Enso Timber (former AS Sylvester against the Estonian Tax and
Customs Board was settled by the 17.06.2009 ruling of Supreme Court of
Estona in favour of the shareholders.
The recently published “Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in
Commercial Arbitration” (2009) recognized partner, Dr Andrius Smaliukas
as the leading arbitration expert in Lithuania.
On
5 June 2009, partner Dr. Andrius Smaliukas, participated on an
international congress, organized by the Lithuanian dental chamber,
where he made a presentation on the topic of ”Safety of the patients in
odontology”.
