Partner Helmut Pikmets has extensive practical experience in tax law and has been involved in numerous high-profile tax disputes, many of which have led to landmark decisions in the Supreme Court of Estonia. For example, he was involved in the Sylvester (Stora Enso Timber) case, the largest tax dispute in the Baltics concerning the taxation of the transfer of shares.
His previous work experience includes tax advice for corporate acquisitions, restructurings and reorganisations, and property and investment transactions. Helmut Pikmets has extensive tax due diligence experience. He also represents his clients in criminal proceedings related to tax crimes (most recently a case involving 64 witnesses) and has been involved in several cases in the public interest against companies and their management bodies (e.g. Divec). Furthermore, he represents clients in the European Court of Human Rights in criminal proceedings related to tax law.
Helmut Pikmets also has excellent knowledge of insolvency and rehabilitation law –acting as a trustee in the bankruptcy proceedings of a commercial bank, Eesti Maapank, in one of the largest bankruptcy case seen in the Baltic States.
